Salman Rushdie cannot come to Kolkata because a motley group of lunatics chose to oppose his visit and we decided to bow down to their dictat. Kamal Hassan's movie faces problem because some one talked of violence if the movie is screened. Taslima Nasreen's book is banned because we cannot stand upto some idiots. Agree it's not a mere Kolkata phenomenon. Pakistan women's cricket team can't play in Mumbai or for that matter MF Hussain had been hounded out of Mumbai.
That said, however, we ought not have been a participant in the race to the bottom. Unfortunately, that's what we are doing and I feel sad for my city, my state which once reached the pinnacle of cultural achievements. Things have worsened further under the current leadership which intelligently used the bengal intelligentsia as a use and throw group. Used them (as the anti-communist feeling became all pervasive, the views of the opinionated intellectual stalwarts were used to garner mass support) before the elections and now the same leadership is virtually at their throat (save for those who are willing to bend backward to please the sensibilities of the venerable Didi). To that extent, it may no longer remain the city that salutes people with spine. The moral degradation is possibly complete now as we have become a bunch of please all people giving in to the voices of politically important lunatics as voice of reason has deserted us.
